The Human Element

In an age where everything is available at the click of a button, it’s easy to lose the connection to the things we use and the spaces we inhabit. But at A43 Architecture, we believe there is a different way to build, a way that not only creates unique, beautiful spaces but also enriches our community. When possible, we seek out collaboration with local craftsmen and artists —individuals who pour their passion and expertise into every piece they create and every structure they build.

Choosing to work with local craftsmen and artisans is a core part of our design philosophy to ‘promote collaboration to deliver an excellent product to our clients.’ This approach brings a host of benefits that go far beyond aesthetics.

A Dialogue of Design and Craft

Unlike mass production, a partnership with a local artisan is a dynamic, collaborative process. The design isn’t just handed over; it’s discussed, debated, and refined. The craftsman’s intimate knowledge of their materials- the grain of the wood, the temper of steel, the subtle imperfections of hand-blown glass- informs and elevates the final product. It’s a true synergy where the architect’s vision and the artisan’s skill come together to create something truly extraordinary.

The Story in Every Detail

Every piece created by a local artisan is a unique work of art. A custom-forged railing, a hand-carved mantelpiece, or a series of hand-painted tiles isn’t just a functional element; it is a storyteller. These details imbue a space with character, giving it a soul and a sense of place that generic, factory-made products can never replicate. The subtle variation and human touches tell a story of the hands that shaped them, making a home feel alive and deeply personal.

Building a Better Future

Beyond the creative benefits, our local collaborations have a tangible impact.

  • Environmental responsibility: By sourcing materials and labor locally, we drastically reduce the carbon footprint associated with long-distance shipping.

  • Economic empowerment: Together with our clients, we are directly investing in our community, supporting small businesses, and helping to preserve traditional skills that might otherwise be lost.

  • Authentic connection: When a building features local art and craftsmanship, it becomes a true reflection of its community and culture.

We are incredibly proud of the relationships we’ve built with local artisans in our community. Here are just a few examples of how these partnerships have brought our projects to life:

Bron Wescott of Coal, LLC was the fabricator for our Front Nine Project!

Coal Metal Works has evolved into an innovative fabrication company using the traditional techniques of blacksmithing and state-of-the-art technologies to produce incredible results.

Mariam Diehl of the Diehl Gallery not only furnished our Front Nine project with art, but she also helped to furnish the A43 Office.

“Ms. Diehl places the greatest importance on honesty, discretion, integrity, and resourcefulness. Her ability to address her clients' individual needs has enabled her to create and maintain long-lasting, productive relationships with her clients as well as with other individuals in her field.”

If you are ever in need of a master woodworker, look no further than Rob Dearing of Dearing Furniture Workshop. We’ve worked with Rob on custom furniture designs, and he is currently in the process of restoring one of our clients' pool tables, which is a family heirloom.
