Unveiling Sun Valley

We are thrilled to unveil the completed renovation of our latest residential project in Sun Valley, Idaho. This undertaking was an architectural conversation- a dialogue between a unique existing structure and the majestic landscape of Mt. Baldy. The goal was not to replace, but to refine, translating a dramatic mountain home into a masterpiece of view-framing and integrated design.

The core of the design challenge lay in maximizing the connection to its environment. Situated atop a butte, the property boasts unparalleled vistas, yet the original design fragmented the experience with numerous small openings.

Our solution was a strategic consolidation of windows and doors. By simplifying the exterior elevations, we achieved two critical outcomes:

  1. Framing vistas: Large, strategically placed glass acts as transparent canvases, framing the sweeping views of Sun Valley. The interior is dramatically enriched, connecting the space directly to the surrounding grandeur.

2. Visual simplicity: The cleaner facades enhance the home’s contemporary feel, replacing visual clutter with architectural clarity.

One of the project's most significant hurdles was addressing the imposing scale of the existing tall structure. Our design intent was to successfully integrate this dominant building back into the landscape. We achieved this through horizontal material bands on the exterior and the full use of a basement-level living space extending out to a terrace:

Our client had a deep appreciation for many of the existing home’s unique details. Our team worked diligently to preserve these elements while simultaneously introducing the cohesive, simplified aesthetic required to achieve the new design and bring it into the modern era.

Renovation isn’t always easy, but we are pleased with how this project turned out. It is a home that still lives in harmony with the landscape while offering a renewed and profound interior experience.
